After cutting your avocado up and having made your favourite healthy avocado smoothie, the following different ways will help you to preserve the avocado.

Preserving Using Lime or Lemon

  1. Cut open the avocado and remove the pit. Immediately coat the flesh of one half with fresh lemon juice. Wrap the avocado half in plastic wrap, and place in the fridge.  This method is good but will leave a little bit of lemon flavor added to your avocado.   The acidic nature of the lemon will prevent the avocado from oxidizing quickly and slow the browning process.

  • However, it is better to preserve the natural taste of the avocado, Cut open the avocado and remove the pit. Skip the lemon and Wrap the avocado half in plastic wrap ensuring that the open part is tightly pressed onto the plastic wrap, and place in the fridge.  This method is good and will not add any other flavor to the avocado.

Submerging in Water

  • Another short term method is to submerge your ripe avocado in water. Cut your avocado into half and fill a glass or plastic container near full with water. With the flesh-side down, place the avocado in the container, cover, and place in the fridge. This will keep the avocado hydrated and prevent it from turning brown for about another two days.

Preserving cut avocado by freezing

Freeze your avocado for a longer period of preservation. Scoop out the flesh from the cut avocado, dice it, and store it in a single-layer in a freezer-safe bag. If you intend to use leftover avocado for avocado smoothies, you can pre-blend the fruit with a little bit of lemon or lime juice to form a purée. Transfer the purée to an airtight container and scoop it out
